Deling grew up in southern China and has called the United States home since 2000. That span across two worlds gave him something rare—not the detached view of an outsider looking in, but the lived understanding of someone who has genuinely worked, felt, and belonged in both cultures. He holds a PhD in computer science, but that's only part of the picture. Deling is a polymath in the truest sense: he reads the world with a scientist's discipline while keeping the warmth and curiosity of someone schooled in the humanities. He speaks Mandarin and Gan dialect, moves through English with ease, and is currently picking up Spanish—because for him, learning never really comes to a stop. After more than two decades in North America, the customs, the history, and the unspoken rules of the English-speaking world have become second nature to him. He's convinced that language and culture are inseparable—that studying a language apart from its culture is just memorizing vocabulary. That conviction runs through everything he teaches. Deling reads the way some people eat: voraciously and across everything—linguistics, history, anthropology, psychology, quantum physics, evolutionary biology.
